Song Lyrics

O my soul
Magnifies the Lord, my God
For He has done great things for me
My spirit sings his praise

O holy night
The stars are brightly shining down
Upon this humble stable bed
The promised Savior lives

Silent night, Holy night
A
ll is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin, mother and child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace

What child is this
Now sleeping still upon my chest
His tiny heart beats hope for men
What wondrous love is this

Song Story

My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior...for He who is mighty has done great things for me and holy is His name.” Luke 1:46-47; 49 (NIV)

Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. Luke 2:19 (NIV)

After the Holy Spirit confirms through Elizabeth that Mary is, indeed, carrying the Promised Savior, Mary responds with a song of joy and thanksgiving to her God. We wanted to capture and reflect on those ideas. Throughout the Magnificat, Mary recounts all that “[He] has done” for her personally, as well as what He has done for His people, Israel. She remembers His mercy and kindness, His strength and provision. She rejoices in the fulfillment of God’s promises to Abraham, to his descendants and, eventually, to herself.

In writing this song, we also wanted to embody the quiet reflection Mary experienced as she cradled the sleeping Savior in her arms. We see in Luke 2:19 that Mary “treasured” and “pondered” all concerning this tiny Messiah, the One on whom rested all the hope of mankind.

Our prayer is that all who listen will sense the Holy Spirit’s call to remember, rejoice and reflect with Mary. May we look back and see His mercy, His kindness, and His provision written throughout countless pages of our stories, and may our souls then glorify the One from whom all of these blessings flow!
