STORY

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

—John 1:1-5 (NIV)

“O Great Light” is a song of remembrance. In a world defined by darkness, a great light has dawned. Our Savior has come! The “Lord and King of Glory” humbled himself, born into fallen humanity in order to redeem and restore all creation.

It is also a song of invitation. We invite the light of the gospel to “dawn on” and “dwell in” us in the here and now, empowering us to live with great hope, peace, joy and love.

Finally, it is a song of praise. We proclaim the good news that “Love has come,” and as a result, “death has been defeated.” So, we join the angels in singing, “glory in the highest! Peace on earth.” (Luke 2:14 NIV)

Our prayer is that the light of Jesus’ love for you would be revealed in and through this song and that you would cherish and long for His presence in your life this Advent season.

LYRICS

O Great Light
Hope of all who wander
Dawn on us this blessed night

O Great Light
Star of David come down
Dwell in us, Emmanuel

Glory in the highest!
Peace on earth
Darkness is defeated!
Love has come
Join with the angels
Proclaim your Savior's birth

Holy, holy, holy
Lord and King of glory
Humble, meek and lowly
Born to give us life

O Great Light
Hope of all who wander
Dwell in us, Emmanuel
